Xstrata Recycling

Every aspect of our recycling business is directed to maintain complete environmental accountability. Xstrata publishes an annual Sustainable Development Report detailing the proactive measures that we take to achieve our goal of meeting world-class environmental standards at all of our recycling operations.

The following permits are generally applicable to any industrial facility and are held by each Xstrata Recycling facility as required by the relevant local governmental authorities:

  • Business licence
  • Air permits for furnaces, baghouses and scrubbers
  • Stormwater discharge permits
  • Hazardous Waste Generator Registration
  • Hazardous Materials Storage Registration

Specific Recycling Approvals by Facility

Xstrata Recycling – San Jose

  • EPA-recognized Hazardous Waste Storage facility
  • Standardized Permit issued by California Department of Toxic Substances Control for treatment of hazardous waste
  • Export registrations for scrap and hazardous waste shipments to Canada
  • Furnaces registered under the EPA Boiler and Industrial Furnace Rule (BIF)
  • Processing and export notifications for Excluded Recyclable Material (California Health and Safety Code)

Xstrata Recycling – East Providence, Rhode Island

  • Furnaces registered under the EPA Boiler and Industrial Furnace Rule (BIF)
  • Export registrations for scrap shipments to Canada

Horne Smelter – Rouyn-Noranda, Québec

  • Certificate of Authorization (C.A.) from the Québec Ministry of the Environment and Wildlife, which permits the operation to process recyclable materials including materials classified as hazardous waste under Canadian regulations
  • Waste import approvals from Environment Canada for various scrap and waste
